This year we are excited to welcome Tom Verity as part of the team, joining our famously popular tutors Rob Buckland, Matt Dunn and Ruth Bourn.
Rob Buckland, Saxophone
Rob is internationally acclaimed as one of the most distinctive and versatile saxophonists of his generation. Appearing as concerto and recital soloist with his Equivox Trio and with the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, he performs throughout the world. He has appeared as concerto soloist with the Chinese National Orchestra, Macau Chamber Orchestra, Austrian Radio Orchestra, CBSO, RLPO, Orchestra of Opera North and Slovenian Army Band.
He has commissioned and recorded music from many of today’s leading composers and recently released a recording of commissioned concertos with the RNCM Wind Orchestra. He regularly works with ensembles such as the Michael Nyman Band, London Saxophonic, BBC Philharmonic, Halle, RLPO, as well as many jazz ensembles. His compositions feature not only on the concert stage but are a popular part of the ABRSM, Trinity & Guildhall Syllabi.
Alongside his busy performing schedule, Rob is Professor of Saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where, since 1997, along with Andy Scott, he has established the UK’s largest and most active Saxophone programme. He was awarded Fellowship of the RNCM in 2008, in recognition of his work with the RNCM saxophone Department, the saxophone in general, and pioneering new music performance.
Rob is a Henri Selmer Paris artist, and endorsee for Vandoren.
Helen Bywater Clarinet
Helen graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2002, gaining a First class Honours and PPRNCM. Since then she has enjoyed working as both a performer and teacher.
As a freelance orchestral player, Helen regularly appears with the BBC Philharmonic, Northern Chamber Orchestra, Manchester Camerata and Sinfonia Viva and has also played with the RPO and Czech Symphony Orchestra. She has played in the pit orchestra for several professional touring shows and very much enjoys solo and chamber music work. She is a member of the Fell Clarinet Quartet with whom she has toured the UK giving recitals and workshops, as well as releasing CDs on the Delphian label.
Helen is Tutor of Clarinet at the Junior RNCM and a visiting coach for the National Children’s Orchestra.
Matt Dunn, Clarinet
Matt Dunn studied at the RNCM and now has a varied freelance career, which includes orchestral work, chamber music, education and outreach projects, and a little jazz!
Matt Dunn studied at the RNCM, and now works as a freelance clarinettist, his orchestral work includes the BBC Philharmonic, RLPO, Opera North and Northern Ballet. Recent chamber music performances include the International Clarinet Congress in Madrid and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
As well as performing, Matt is involved with education and outreach work, taking part in projects in schools, youth centres hospitals and hospices.
Ruth Bourn, Saxophone
Ruth Bourn graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 1997, with a Bmus(hons) and performance diplomas (PPRNCM) in both solo performance and chamber music.
For many years Ruth played soprano saxophone with the Kintamarni Saxophone Quartet which performed at venues including The Wigmore Hall, The Purcell Room and The Bridgewater Hall. They also had the privilege of playing for President Clinton at Blenhiem Palace. Ruth’s solo experience includes performances at the Park Lane Group series and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. She is a regular extra on all saxophones with orchestras including the Hallé, the BBC Philharmonic, the RLPO, and the Northern Sinfonia.
Ruth is currently Tutor in Saxophone at the Junior RNCM and Manchester High School for Girls.
Gilly Blair, Course assistant
Gilly graduated from the RNCM with a First Class BMus(hons) degree in 2014 and is now approaching the end of her Masters degree at the RNCM under the tutelage of Rob Buckland. She has received tuition and appeared in masterclasses with internationally acclaimed artists including Vincent David, Arno Bornkamp and Timothy McAllister and has studied at the prestigious 'European University of the Saxophone' in Gap, France.
As a soloist, Gillian has performed recitals around the country and performs regularly with groups including the Borealis Saxophone Quartet, Polaris Duo and Octavia Trio and has performed with larger ensembles including the the Orchestra of Opera North, European Union Youth Wind Orchestra, Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra, Soundscape Chamber Orchestra, the Tenor Saxophone Collective and the Commonwealth Youth Orchestra.
