Manchester Single Reed
Dear Manchester Single Reeders,

I do hope that this message finds you well and rested after 3 days of making music and friends last week. I know that I speak on behalf of all of the staff when I say that we had a great time with such lively and interested students. We hope that they had as much fun as we all did.

Some of the highlights of the summer school were the workshops. Anthony Bailey's composition workshop was thought provoking and creative, which was demonstrated in the final concert. Mike Hall's jazz workshop is an inspiration and everyone always enjoys this element of the summer school. Mike's gentle introduction to jazz and his absolute passion, really gets us fired up.

As always the backbone of the summer school are our amazing tutors. Rob, Keith, Lawrence and Sarah are brilliant performers and educators. The small working groups, of similar ability and skills, get the best from the passionate teachers in areas such as advanced techniques, platform skills and coping with nervousness. Master classes were fun, relaxed and informative, all giving our students new ways to help further their playing.

The end of each day saw everyone together in massed group rehearsals. Students got the opportunity to play different instruments such as alto clarinets, contrabass clarinets and baritone saxophones. This rehearsal time proved enjoyable for everyone. Under the baton of the ever inspiration Rob Buckland, the sessions were fun, full of stories and lessons, and a fantastic beautiful "big" noise.

I would like to that all the students’ parents, families and friends for attending the final concert. This showcase is as much a part of the course as any workshop or master class and it was wonderful to see so many happy faces.

Finally a big thanks to everyone else involved in making the 2011 summer school the great success it was.

See you all in 2012.

Abi.
